GENERAL INFO:
At 8:30pm, take a mini-lesson of a few CI and tango concepts to play with in your dance.
At 9pm the music begins and you're invited to jam/practica.
Play at tango-ing, have a full-on CI dance, go back and forth in upright and floor dances, play with lead/follow concepts, and everything in between.
This event is for experienced Contact Improvisation dancers and experienced Tango dancers who want to play with cross-pollinating these dance forms.
We share our group experience with both dance vocabularies: after each 3 songs, we call out switching partners, like a tango-tanda on cortinas,
so you get multiple partners and lots of practice/play. Bare feet, Socks (great for turns), or tango shoes all OK.
We recommend stretchy or wide pants you can go to the floor in and drawstrings rather than belts.
Just as in regular CI Jams and alternative/queer milongas there are no gender rules, so everyone partners with everyone and lead-follow concepts are practiced by all:
this is a great opportunity for men to practice following, women to practice leading.
We dance to a mix of tango and electronica and sometimes host local live musicians. We end with a BRIEF closing circle to exchange names and announcements.

LEVEL/SKILL REQUIRED: 1 year current weekly practice in either CI or Tango.

MUSIC: Contemporary Tango and Electronica, occasional live musicians.

INTRICACIES OF WALKING IN TANGO with Zack Bernstein and Chelsea Eng.
Building on Zack's December class, further explore ways to walk in the tango embrace while maintaining a satisfying connection with one's partner: use of disassociation of the upper body, weaving from in line to outside partner and back again, the concept of normal system vs. cross system, and contact-suggestive options for play.
BIO(S):
Chelsea Eng & Zack Bernstein are lifelong movers who work at the forefront of their respective dance forms in the US and beyond. Chelsea specializes in tango but loves contact. Zack specializes in contact but loves tango. As a professional performer, improviser, choreographer and teacher of Argentine Tango, Chelsea has taught and performed in international dance festivals in many cities, including Buenos Aires. She holds a Master's Degree in Education - Dance Specialization from Stanford University. Chelsea is a co-founder of the all-woman dance company Tango Con*FusiĆ³n and founder of the popular Argentine Tango Program at City College of San Francisco. A world-class juggler and dancer, Zack has toured on multiple continents. He co-founded Capacitor performance group and currently performs with Scott Wells. Zack teaches contact throughout the SF Bay Area at venues including Counterpulse, Ecstatic Dance, Athletic Playground, Studio Valencia, and the Thursday Jam in Berkeley. Both Chelsea and Zack have trained in modern & ballet and danced extensively in Argentina. Together they explore the interplay of tango & contact as a medium for discovery, richer partnering, and the creation of performance work.

TANGO WALKS with Zack Bernstein.
BIO:
Zack Bernstein is a dance improviser from SF. He studies
and teaches tango with Chelsea Eng. Zack currently performs
with Scott Wells, Sense Object, Karl Frost and others,

venues. Inspiring contact improv experiences include:
CI36, Las Brusquitas, Contact in Rio, and WCCIF.

Nov 15 2010
ENTANGLEMENT with Laura Maguire.
This class will focus on lower body entanglement while
maintaining neutral upper body frames. Specific techniques
from tango, including ganchos (hooks), sacadas (foot
displacements), and barridas (foot sweeps) will be explored
in an improvised dance with no particular leader or
follower.

BIO:
Laura's first dance love was Argentine Tango, which she
danced obsessively for several years in the 1990's. Contact
Improvisation caught Laura's attention almost a decade ago
and has been a serious passion for the past eight years.
She has taught CI in the US and in Thailand. Laura was
delighted when interest in a fusion between CI and Tango
grew sufficiently to start the Tango-Contact Jam.
